If hearing the word “Sale” instantly makes you want to redirect your monthly gas payment to your expanding closet, you have probably spent the last month trying not to go into fits (or bankruptcy) thanks to the likes of Net-A-Porter and SSENSE (among others). And while we generally are right there with you digging through our couch cushions and selling off our pets while justifying any good deal, getting a grip on what makes a good investment versus a case of buyer’s remorse (made all the more remorseful thanks to those fateful words “final sale”) takes a little pre-sale planning and a fair amount of self control.
Our advice? Don’t be distracted by that new dazzling price next to those embellished pants (no matter how badass they are, 40% off of WAY too much is still too much) and instead invest in quality pieces (with some edge) that you will continue to wear no matter the trends. For us, we both used this sale season to nab the ultimate in investment staples: the leather jacket. You see, if you select the right one (i.e., bypass the one covered in an American flag, it is 70% off for a reason), it will be both timeless and seasonless, allowing you you to wear summer items into the fall and keeping you effortlessly cool come October. And while you may not be able to wear it every day right away, it has a lot more longevity than those (admittedly brilliant) high-heeled loafers you’ve had in your cart for the last three days.
