Sure, you know Cult Gaia. By now you’ve seen their signature Ark bag all over Instagram and them some. But did you know that founder Jasmin Larian is not only coming out with a handful of new bags that are just as sick (that Babe bag, you guys…) but turbans, bangles and ready to wear? Yeah, you read that right. It’s time to get excited.
We have a feeling that by the time the summer is over, Jasmin will have more than one “it” bag under her belt.
TKC: How did you get your start in the fashion industry?
JL: My mom was a designer and my dad made toys and fashion dolls (he created the Bratz dolls) so I was always exposed to it all. I always knew this is what I wanted to do.
TKC: Why handbags?
JL: It’s the best way to approach wearable art. It’s instantly recognizable and is timeless.
TKC: How did you arrive at the name Cult Gaia? Did you ever consider calling the collection something else?
JL: Gaia is the greek Goddess of mother earth and the daughter of chaos. Nature inspires everything I do and everything we create here. Our ethos is perfectly imperfect mimicking nature, and chaos is the greatest creative force there is! And brand building is essentially rallying like minded people, kind of like a cult.
TKC: While we love the OG Ark bag (bag of the summer for sure), we are so freaking excited about all of the new stuff you are coming out with. We know this is a bit like asking you to pick a favorite child, but do you have a favorite piece this season?
JL: The collapsible Lilleth bag is pretty amazing because you can travel with it everywhere and it doesn’t take up space.
TKC: This office space is pretty new for you, right? How did you approach decorating it?
JL: We wanted to be in a creative space that aesthetically is in line with our brand. I wanted it to be practical but also made for the moving eye. I need to be surrounded by pretty and weird things. We did a lot of 1stdibs buying and used other pieces I’ve collected over the years. A friend of mine, Kevin Klein (Kevin Klein Design) helped me with the layout and editing.
TKC: In your non work life, is there a particular designer or look that you tend to favor?
JL: Cavalli 2005 and vintage.
TKC: On the flipside, are there any trends that you absolutely loathe?
JL: Fur sandals and underboob.
TKC: If you could only buy one item this Spring, what would it be?
JL: A Kelly Wearstler Surfboard.
TKC: Name one beauty product you couldn’t live without.
JL: Tom Ford Blush.
TKC: What is the lost song you had playing on your iPod/iPhone?
JL: Keeper by Fortunes.
TKC: Favorite emoji?
JL: The one that is crying laughing.
TKC: Coffee or tea?
JL: Coffee in the morning, tea at night.
TKC: Mascara or Lipstick?
TKC: Instagram or Snapchat?
TKC: If you could collaborate with one artist or designer on your next collection, who would it be?
JL: Gio Ponti or Kelly Wearstler.
TKC: Is there one moment that stands out where you felt like you finally “made it”?
JL: I still don’t think I’ve made it and I think constantly being on the verge of that feeling is the key to success. But notable moments are when Net-A-Porter called and those times when we can’t keep our inventory in stock.
TKC: What advice would you give to 22 year old Jasmin?
JL: Just keep doing what you’re doing, take risks, think big, read more books and do more. Everything is going to be OK, even when it’s not. Move on. Never stop creating.
