Do Lip Stains Ever Work?

I want to like lip stains.

Saturated color without a matte looking lip in an easy to apply wand. There’s nothing I don’t love about this idea. It’s color without all of the fuss and pretty much everything I stand for.

But do they ever really work?

Every time I’ve ever tried a lip stain (and they have been quite a few in number), I never walk away happy.

First of all, lip liner or not, they bleed. Without fail, within two minutes of applying a stain, color is working its way around through the bayous of my mouth like it’s on an expedition. Setting aside the fact that rivers of color running around your face aren’t acceptable on any day other than Halloween, I don’t need help accentuating the wrinkles near my lips. I spend a lot of money trying to hide them, thank you very much.

Not to mention, does anyone else have trouble removing it? I get it, it’s a stain. It’s supposed to be long-lasting. But like, through the apocalypse long-lasting? I’d like to be able to go home at night and take the stuff off. I mean, maybe that’s just me, but wearing last night’s lip color to breakfast at 7 a.m. seems a little much. Hell, breakfast at 7 a.m. is already a little much.

Finally, I don’t find the color to ever be consistent or as easy to apply as promised. Because it is a stain and not a matte lipstick adding a little more color to one spot than another makes a difference. So I usually just end up lathering it on to level it out and then end up with such dark lips I might as well have worn a lipstick to begin with.

For those of you who are wondering, what is the point? Just don’t wear lip stains. I hear you.  But, full circle, here’s what I’m getting at: I want to like lip stains.  So do you have one you love? Is all of this just me and am I doing something wrong? Is there advice that I need to heed in applying them in the future? Is there a brand that works above all others?

I know this is usually a space where we wax poetic about all of our favorite things and share them with you, but today I am asking you to share with me. Because this stuff is hella popular so clearly someone has figured it out and I need all the help I can get.
