Here’s How Our Black Kitchen Turned Out

Our kitchen was probably the biggest risk we took in this build.  We chose to incorporate a lot of different elements – a waterfall counter on our island, open shelves, a built-in refrigerator, etc. But probably our biggest risk was the decision to paint our cabinets black.

With all of the white and grey cabinet inspiration out there, going black felt like a big departure.   Throw in the fact that our builder basically looked at me like I was nuts, and I would be lying if I wasn’t a little nervous about how it would turn out.

Now that it’s all said and done and the risks panned out, the kitchen turned out to be my favorite room in the house.  Maybe it’s the way the black cabinets flow into the dining room and compliment that Ellie Cashman wallpaper I basically sold my soul for.  Or maybe it’s the mixing of the metals (another loop I threw our builder for).  But something about the space really feels modern and fresh while still warm and homey.

I think it really helped that we kept all of the other surfaces light and the floors a more natural color.  Plus, all of that open shelving really lightened the space as well.

As an aside, I’ve gotten a lot of comments about open shelving and keeping them organized and styled.  Truth be told, I haven’t found it particularly difficult or expensive.  I focused on simple wood and marble pieces (all from Target, so they weren’t super pricy) with a few statement pieces from Mackenzie-Childs thrown in.  I keep the pieces I use everyday (like our Mackenzie-Childs coffee mugs) on the lower shelves, with pieces we use only on occasion on the upper shelves.

And honestly, that’s it.  They organize themselves.  I’ve got bigger issues keeping kids toys off of the floor.
