When we started this series on makeup artist’s must-haves (see past features here and here), we wanted to introduce you to some amazingly talented women who actually know how to make a girl look good, while at the same time give your makeup bag an overhaul by showcasing products that professionals actually use (and not because they were paid to do so). What we ended up doing was creating a sort of “if you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life” debate/game only for topical products found at the beauty counter. Which, as it turns out, achieves all of our previous goals but could also be turned into a drinking game. Danielle Fowler is the next beauty guru who has elected to indulge us and play along. If she picks one of your must-haves, drink.
Danielle is in her second season as the department head makeup artist for Arrow (you may have heard of it), where her talent with a blush brush earned her a Leo nomination this year. When we were on set last week, we stopped in and asked her to give us a breakdown of what her makeup bag would have in it if we forced her to give everything up but five things. These were her choices. Good news: When the zombie apocalypse comes, we know where to find the Chubby Sticks. Drink.
“1. Smashbox – Shadow Trio in “Headshot”
This is my favorite eye-shadow trio! It is the perfect combination of highlight and shadow. I like to apply the pink tone all over the lid, the yellow in the inner corner and on the brow bone, and then the brown at the outer corner and tight to the bottom lash. I use this trio for day looks, evening looks and photo-shoots.
2. Clinique – Chubby Sticks
These lip colours are the perfect combination of lipstick, stain and balm. There is a huge range of colors and, if applied sparingly, they can be used as a stain. For more of a punch, apply a few coats. In a pinch it can even double as a blush! Some of my favorite shades are Fuller Fig (nude) and Chunky Cherry (pinky flush).
3. It Cosmetics – Bye Bye Undereye Concealer
This concealer is truly amazing. It has a very pigmented consistency and a little goes a very long way. It comes in a variety of great tones for covering under eye darkness and blemishes. I like to mix a lighter shade with foundation and use as a subtle highlighter on cheekbones too. It is a very versatile product and is definitely a must have for my kit.
4. Tarte – Amazonian Clay Blush
This blush is the powder version of the famous stain sticks originally made by Tarte. The colours are rich and concentrated but easy to apply with a large blush brush. You have the versatility to apply sparingly for a flush of color or add more to pump it up for an evening look. My favorite thing about this blush is that it lasts all day! I like to pat it over a clear lip balm and wear as my lip color and then you only have to carry one product in your bag. Favorite colors include Tipsy (bright pinky orange) and Frisky (deep pink with gold sparkle).
5. Skyn Iceland – Pure Cloud Cream
This moisturizer is fantastic! It has the most unique texture – so light and airy. It is soothing and hydrating, the perfect thing to put on first thing in the morning and last thing at night. I absolutely cannot live without it.”
